Waking up was disorienting. I was stiff from the deep sleep. I hadn’t moved all night. Riker sighed when I shifted off him.
“You okay?” he asked, his voice gravelly and rough from sleep. His eyes were still closed.
“I’m awesome,” I told him. I shouldn’t have been. I should have been freaking out about the crisis my life had become, but instead, I stretched like a lazy cat, feeling utterly content.
“You are awesome,” he said.
I laughed. “That’s not what I meant.” Leaning over, I kissed him, wanting him to open his eyes.
He pried the right one open and squinted up at me. “How are you so wide awake? I feel like I ran a fucking marathon in full gear.”
“You kind of did. That’s a lot of leg action.”
“I can hike forty miles in one day in full gear. Two hours in bed shouldn’t bust me.”
“It shouldn’t make you cranky either,” I said. “And it clearly did.”
His face softened. “Don’t think that. I’m just an asshole who doesn’t know how to be romantic the morning after.”
“I’m just giving you a hard time. And I have no idea why I’m so awake. I’m usually a total bitch in the morning.”
“Good to know.”
“Maybe it’s because that sex was amazeballs. I can’t possibly wake up bitchy after that.”
“It was better than that. It was the best”—he kissed me—“sex”—he kissed me again—“ever.”
“See?” I told him. “You are very romantic.”
“I bet I could stand some improvement though.”
“You could make me coffee. That would be really romantic.”
“We need to talk about this addiction you have.”
I pouted. “After coffee.”
Riker laughed. “You’re lucky you’re cute.”
“It can’t hurt,” I told him breezily.
Now he really laughed. “Oh, sassy today, too. I like it. Now please let me up so I can take a piss.”
He did have to work on the romantic thing. But Rome wasn’t built in a day. At least the parting shot was fantastic as he climbed out of bed, stood, and stretched. It was my first view of his ass in the light. Yep. Everything on him was hard. I kind of wanted to reach out and bite it, but I resisted the urge. I’d also never seen the tattoo on his calf. It looked like an eagle that wanted to cut a bitch. That was one pissed-off bird.
As he walked across the room, I lazily watched him, smiling to myself. Wondering what time it was, I reached for my phone on the nightstand. I had several texts from Cat and I sat up in alarm. I had been texting her since she’d left and hadn’t gotten a response. So that there was a whole stack of them worried me.
With good reason. They had decided to unplug her mother from life support after the doctors had done a brain scan and found no activity. My heart sank. Tears of sympathy rushed to my eyes. That must have been the most horrible thing to have the doctors tell her, and I knew that Cat had struggled a lot with the reality of her mother’s mental illness.
